Panther teams earn second in County Meet

SOFIE SUTCLIFFE of Elkhart Lake (right). – Review photos by Steve Ottman SHEBOYGAN – The Plymouth Panthers placed second in the boys and girls competition at the Sheboygan County Cross Country Meet Tuesday afternoon at Sheboygan Lutheran.

PHS narrowly missed winning its sixth straight girls title as Sheboygan North edge the Panthers, 52-53. Junior Ellie Welsch paced PHS with a third-place finish in 20 minutes, 36 seconds on the 3.1-mile [5,000-meter] course. The Panthers were missing two of their varsity runners due to illness.

The winner was Ella Reinemann of Sheboygan North in 20:15.

In the boys meet, Sheboygan Lu- theran eked past PHS, 52-56, to capture first. Senior Alan Schaefer led the Panthers with a runner-up showing at 17:07 over 3.1 miles. Clark Otte of Sheboygan Falls earned first with an impressive 15:38.

Guse was second last year.

HG finished seventh (179 points) and and Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah (230) was eighth in the girls meet.

In the boys competition, HG took seventh (188) and EL-G had an incomplete squad.

“We had a great set of races tonight – boys and girls. The varsity and junior varsity did an excellent job,” said PHS head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“We really had some kids in all four races take some big jumps forward which is great to see as we hit the important meets at the end of the season.

“Ellie and Lauren [Rabe, fourth] finished their races very well to lead us. Alan had a nice final 400 [meters] to secure his second-place finish,” said Grosshuesch.

Maria Ryan of PHS won the girls JV race in 22:13. The Panthers’ Riley Huibregtse took third in the JV boys race in 19:45.

“Today was another great leap forward for the Tigers with a total of seven athletes running personal-best performances,” said HG head coach Gary Kalk.
