Panthers triumph, keep ECC lead

BERLIN – The Plymouth Panthers stayed atop the East Central Conference boys soccer race with a 3-1 win over Berlin here Thursday afternoon.

PHS upped its ECC record to 9-0- 1 (10-1-2). Kettle Moraine Lutheran (Jackson) is in second place at 8-0- 2. The Panthers host the Chargers Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. in a crucial match. The teams tied 2-2 in their first meeting this season.

Berlin dropped to 6-3-1 in the ECC (14-4-1 overall).

The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead on a goal by Clayton Lautenschlaeger at the 26-minute mark. The Indians answered only two minutes later on a goal by Dillon Herbst.

PHS regained the lead, 2-1, when sophomore Anthony Vargas, up from the junior varsity, scored his first varsity goal in the 29th minute. The Panthers led 2-1 at halftime.

Mason Dale scored a big insurance goal for the Panthers at the 74-minute mark as they took a 3-1 lead.

Connor Joseph and Adam Smith had one assist each for PHS.

“It was a different game today from last time we played Berlin. Today, they were more aggressive and fast,” said Panther head coach Rommy Herrera.

PHS defeated the Indians, 4-0, earlier in the season.

“We had a hard time during the first 15 minutes of the game. They controlled the ball during that time and even had opportunities to score but we scored first and the lead gave us confidence.

“After the first goal we played better and we passed the pressure to the home team,” said Herrera.

PHS led 7-4 in shots on goal. Panther goalie Saunders Gentine made three saves. Berlin goalie Thomas Reed had three saves.
