Tigers lose heartbreaker in BEC match

HOWARDS GROVE – Joe Kay’s goal with only five seconds left gave Kohler a thrilling 3-2 win over the Howards Grove Tigers in Big East Conference boys soccer play here Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers’ defense was unable to clear the ball near their goal and Kay was able to find separation and kick the ball into the left side of the net.

HG slipped to 5-3-1 in the BEC (6-6-1 overall). The Blue Bombers improved to 3-3-1 in the league (4- 4-1 overall).

“Overall, we played an outstanding game in my opinion. We played hard, as always, the entire game. I thought our game plan worked really well and we challenged them on every possession,” said Tiger head coach Bob Peterson.

“Not taking anything away from Kohler, who is a very good team, but we definitely should’ve won this game.”

HG led 1-0 at halftime on Peter Grimm’s goal, assisted by Bennett Ebertz, at the 36-minute mark.

The Blue Bombers seized a 2-1 lead on back-to-back goals by Jack Kohler and Kay at the 65- and 76-minute marks, respectively.

Grimm’s goal with three minutes remaining knotted the game, 2-2.

HG led 10-5 in shots on goal. Tiger goalie Austin Bender made two saves and Kohler goalie Collin Adams had eight.
