Peterson’s long TD run gives Tigers first win

NORTH FOND DU LAC – Junior running back Jack Peterson’s 82-yard touchdown scamper with 8:13 left to play gave the Howards Grove a 24-21 win over North Fond du Lac in nonconference football action here Friday night.

The win was the Tigers’ first this season and improved their record to 1-6. The Orioles dropped to 1-6.

“The players fought through to the end and were rewarded with a victory. It was truly a team victory as all phases – offense, defense and our kicking game – had a hand in the win,” said Tiger head coach David Schmid.

The Orioles outscored HG 15-0 in the third quarter to erase a 17-6 deficit and go ahead 21-17. Junior running back Griffin Brunet scored both of the Orioles’ TDs in the third period on runs of 80 and 10 yards, respectively.

Peterson’s 19-yard TD burst gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Brunet’s 66-yard scoring sprint pulled the Orioles to within 7-6 in the opening period.

The Tigers answered with a 9-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Isaac Dirker to junior wide receiver Eric Reinemann which put HG up 14-6 after one quarter.

A 22-yard field goal by Derek Stauss gave the Tigers a 17-6 halftime lead.

Peterson led the Tigers in rushing with 115 yards on 20 carries. Dierker was 8-for-11 passing for 125 yards. Josh Scheuren was the team’s top receiver with 66 yards on two catches.

Dirker had three punts go inside the Orioles’ 20-yard line.

“The rainy conditions forced the Tigers to rely on the ground game. Yards came in spurts and our efficient passing game kept their defense off balance,” said Schmid.

Brunet had a monster game on the ground with 269 yards on 30 carries.
