PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Panthers tightened their hold on first place in the East Central Conference boys soccer race with a 2-0 win over second-place Kettle Moraine Lutheran (Jackson) Tuesday afternoon at Panther Field.

PHS upped its ECC record to 10- 0-1 (11-2-2 overall). The Chargers dropped to 8-1-2 in the league (10- 3-3 overall). The teams tied, 2-2, in their other meeting this season. Each team has three ECC matches left.

“A great game today between the best two teams in our conference. We knew coming in of the difficulty of this game because KML was going to try everything possible to win and try to win conference,” said Panther head coach Rommy Herrera.

“KML has a good team and some really good players that can make a difference if we give them space. However, with no doubt I can see we were better [than KML] today. We controlled their attacks and didn’t let them get close to our goal.”

The Panthers led 7-4 in shots on goal and did a nice job of keeping the pressure on the Chargers’ defense.

Junior defender Connor Joseph gave PHS a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal at the 20-minute mark. Joseph punched the ball into the net past the goalie from close range.

Sophomore Anthony Vargas made it 2-0 with a goal at the 82-minute mark.

Jacob Welsch and Joseph had one assist each. Panther goalie Saunders Gentine made four saves.

“I am very proud of the intelligent way we played today – making smart decisions offensively and defensively and how every player in the team gave their best,” said Herrera.

“We have three more games left in conference before playoffs and we will continue working hard to win conference and be ready for the big tournament [playoffs].”
