Huskies clinch a share of the conference title

STURGEON BAY – The New Holstein/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Huskies clinched at least a share of the Eastern Wisconsin/ Packerland Conference boys soccer championship with a 1-0 win over host Sturgeon Bay Thursday night.

NH/EL-G, which has a 16-match unbeaten streak, upped its league record to 8-0 (16-3-1 overall). The Huskies can wrap up the outright league title with a win at Manitowoc Roncalli Monday, Oct. 10 which ends their regular season.

The Clippers, who came into the game tied for first with the Huskies, slipped to 7-1 in the conference.

Senior Josue Valenzuela, a forward/midfielder, scored the winning goal at the 6:02 mark in the first half.

“We knew going into the game it wasn’t going to be easy but everyone did a great job at their positions and played very tough,” said Husky co-head coach Steve Conrad.

“I told them on the bus before we got off that winning was the only option and I believe they took it in and played as hard as they could. I believe this win will really help us in the seeding of the fast-approaching playoffs and having a higher seed allows us home-field advantage.

“Another one of those days where I’m very proud of the performance everyone put into this big game,” said Conrad.

NH/EL-G goalie Jordan Bahr made 21 saves and Clipper goalie Trent Maas had nine.
