Panthers repeat as conference champions

WINNECONNE – The Plymouth Panthers wrapped up their second straight undisputed East Central Conference boys soccer title with a 6-0 rout over Winneconne here Tuesday night.

The Panthers raised their ECC record to 12-0-1 (13-2-2 overall). Kettle Moraine Lutheran (Jackson) is in second place at 10-1-2. The Chargers’ only loss was to PHS, 2-0, on Oct. 4.

PHS, which recorded its third straight ECC shutout, will close out the league and regular seasons Thursday, Oct. 13 at home against Campbellsport.

“One of our goals this season was to win conference and today [Tuesday] we can celebrate. The team played very well, controlling the ball and every opportunity to score,” said Panther head coach Rommy Herrera.

“I am very proud of this group of players and all the hard work they have been putting into this season. We have one more conference game before playoffs and our goal is to finish undefeated and get ready for the tournament.”

The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead only 37 seconds into the match on a goal by Clayton Lautenschlaeger. Anthony Vargas scored to make it 2-0 at the 12-minute mark.

PHS went up 3-0 at halftime on a goal by Dylan Koehn in the 43th minute. Koehn added another goal at the 48-minute mark for a 4-0 Panther lead.

Mason Dale and Drew Schmitt tallied the final two goals in the 69th and 73rd minutes, respectively.

Garrison Pierce led PHS in assists with two. Vargas, Lautenschlaeger and Brady Petrie had one assist each.

The Panthers had a whopping 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. The PHS goalies were Saunders Gentine and Gabe Thull, with Thull making one save.
