Referendum

To the Editor,

I would like to make a few points about the up coming school referendum in Sheboygan Falls. The purpose of the referendum is construct a new Middle School to the East of the existing Elementary School. The cost would be just over 30 Million. This is a lot of money. But is it money well spent. The tax cost on a $200,000 home is calculated to be $5 per month or $60 per year.

The plan for the new school is projected to satisfy the needs of the students, for the foreseeable future. The existing building has been well cared for and maintained, but it has reached the end of its useful life. It lacks a secure entrance, has limited handicap access, and has asbestos thru out the building. It was built 80 years ago and has been added onto several times, and has multiple level changes thru out it 3 floors. Not only does it have 3 floors but on these floors you have to go up and down several ramps, the after effects of several additions to the original building. The staff of the school has done a great job of working around the limitations created by the building issues, but only so much can be done with what they have to work with.

Some would say just fix the problems with the old school. Studies have shown that fixing the old school, would take 3 years because it would have to be done in stages and disrupt the surrounding neighborhood thru out this time. If you tore down the old school, you would have to hold school somewhere else for a year plus, during construction, and you would still be land locked with no room to expand. Also it could cost more than building a new school.

The School Board and their consultants, have worked countless hours, to put forth what they have determined to be the best option for the community moving forward.

I am not telling you how to vote for this referendum, I am asking you to educate yourself on this matter. Go to the School Board Web Site. Go to one of the informational meetings. Call up your School Board members. Think also, that the entire community gains from an educated community.

I live in the district, so my taxes will go up with yours. I am currently working full time, but will retire in two years, so I am looking at a fixed income shortly.

In the interest of full discloser, my daughter serves on the Sheboygan Falls School Board, and I have two Grand Daughters that attend school in the district.
