Throughout the season head coach Brett Damrow has emphasized to his Howards Grove girls volleyball team to have trust in their training and to focus on one touch at a time. The Tigers have used that formula very successfully this season.

Other keys to the Tigers’ terrific season are their determination, teamwork, and believing in themselves and each other. Rest assured, the Tigers will play their hearts out and work together as a cohesive unit in the Division 3 state tournament. If this team plays up to its potential it will definitely contend for a state title.

“I feel we can [win a state championship] if we work our butts off like we did [this season],” said Tiger senior middle blocker Addi Gerber after her team won the sectional title Saturday night against Lake Country Lutheran (Hartland).

Asked what the keys are for the Tigers to win state, Gerber responded, “Being composed and getting our passes up so we can get the hitters on balls.”

The Tigers remained cool and confident versus Lutheran, no matter what the score was. They trailed two games to one and responded with a 25-23 win in game four, forcing a deciding fifth set. HG rallied from a 17-14 deficit in game four.

In the Tigers’ 15-12 win in game five, senior outside hitter Olivia Stauss came up big with four spike kills to spark the Tigers’ offense. While players like Stauss stepped up big-time, the win in the sectional finals was truly a team effort as it has been all season.

“The only thing I told the girls in the huddle in the fifth game was that this is why we play sports, this is why you get up in the morning, this is why you put the extra effort in,” recalled Damrow. “The girls kept believing in themselves.

“All we talk about is if our minds and hearts can meet in the middle and have that kind of concentration, then good things will happen.”

The Tigers have worked very hard in practice all season which has fueled their outstanding success. Now they hope that hard work will pay off at state.
