Fred Roerdink, age 88, son of the late John and Alvina (Schulz) Roerdink, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, November 4, 2016.

Fred attended local schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 18 years old. He served his basic training at Fort Knox, KY and was then sent to Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington DC, where he played bass sousaphone in the 304th Army Hospital band. While there Fred was promoted to company clerk for the band. They played many concerts for the patients in the hospital, on the grounds and on other occasions played for parades, etc. A very memorable event was playing for a military funeral in Arlington Cemetery. Fred was stationed at Walter Reed for the rest of his enlistment.

Fred married Dorothy Ladwig, Nov. 17, 1951. For Fred it was love at first sight. Dorothy has been a wonderful loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Thank you Dorothy for all the years we shared.

Fred was a lifelong employee of Hayssen Mfg. Co. He started as a machinist apprentice and received his state license. He worked in all departments in the plant and final tested many packaging machines for customers before they were shipped. Because of his knowledge and experience he was asked to take charge of the Inspection Department and eventually was promoted to Quality Control Manager, a position he held for many years until his retirement in 1995 after more than 51 years with the company.

Fred and Dorothy relocated to Spartanburg, SC in 1986 with Hayssen. They traveled many miles while in the south and enjoyed the many years they were there.

In 2012 Fred and Dorothy moved back to Sheboygan to be closer to their family. He was blessed to enjoy many happy times with his family and was very proud of each one of them.

Fred is survived by his wife of almost 65 years; Dorothy of Sheboygan, son Jim (Ellen) of Johnson Creek and their children Julie (Andy) Ebenhoe and his two Great grandchildren: (Ethan and Rebecca), Sheboygan, and Nicholas (Donna), Appleton; Daughter Carol (Steve) Bimmel, Sheboygan Falls and their children Jennifer (Alex) Torborg, Washburn WI, Peter, Twentynine Palms, CA and David, Sheboygan Falls.
