Hering, defense lead Panthers to lopsided win

PLYMOUTH – Senior guard Kalei Hering tallied 19 points and the Plymouth defense had an impressive 21 steals to key the Panthers’ 64-45 rout over visiting Kiel in nonconference girls basketball action here Tuesday night.

The Panthers raised their record to 2-0 while the Raiders dropped to 2-1.

PHS broke the game open by outscoring Kiel 36-22 in the second half after leading just 28-23 at halftime.

“In the second half we got stops [on defense] and were able to convert those stops into easy points. We shot 58 percent [15 of 26] from the field in the second half,” said Panther head coach Brad Shutter.

At the start of the second half Hering scored two field goals off Kiel turnovers and Emily Majerus sank a three-pointer to spark the Panthers. PHS scored several baskets off turnovers in the game.

PHS committed 12 turnovers compared to 23 by Kiel.

“This was a good nonconference win for us. Hering played extremely well and had a good overall game,” said Shutter.

“Streblow played very well too. Jessica Leider, Megan Goeser and Lexi Lautenschlaeger did a good job against [Sierra] Schobert.”

Schobert, a 6-foot-3 center, was held to four points in the second half after scoring six in the first. Sophomore guard Savannah Walsdorf paced Kiel in scoring with 12.

Streblow, a senior guard, led PHS in steals with an outstanding nine. Hering and Majerus added three apiece. Leider led in rebounds with five.

Majerus had a team-high five assists and Lydia Rhude made three.

JUNIOR VARSITY GAMES

The PHS JV No. 2 team fell, 50-17, to drop to 1-1, Elise Bleck led the Panthers in scoring with five.

“We struggled offensively and had far too many turnovers to compete against a team like Kiel. We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball and getting open,” said PHS coach Scott Milslagle.
