HOWARDS GROVE — With the voter approval of the $4.7 million referendum, Howards Grove School District Superintendent Chris Peterson provided an update on the upcoming auditorium project for the high school at the Nov. 22 School Board meeting.

Peterson stated that the floor plans are being reviewed to consider seating, changing rooms, storage areas, concessions and adding a family restroom area. Also the skylights have to be replaced with step lights.

Details of the contracts with the construction company and architect are being reviewed by the district’s attorney. Also, soil samples will be taken in the near future.

The construction area will be quilted to help prevent frost from penetrating too deep in anticipation of ground breaking in early spring.

Board members Kari Bramstedt and Nate Dehne will represent the board on the advisory committee for the auditorium, along with representatives from the music, art and drama departments.

Two new high school course offerings were approved. The high school will offer Creative English One (Creative Writing) and Creative English Two (Drama) for the 2017-2018 school year.

The board reviewed the academic calendars for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years. The calendars were recommended for approval at the December meeting.

Board President Mark DeAmico thanked the following groups for donations:

• The Howards Grove Education Foundation donated towards the Challenge Day Program at the high school.

• Lynn Berg donated money towards the purchase of updated equipment for the high school weight room.

• The FFA donated money for students to attend the FFA Convention.

• Northwoods Superior Chemical donated money to purchase new volleyball uniforms.

The PTO made a donation to the kindergarten for a field trip to Whispering Orchard, the middle school book swap and for food for the middle school staff during the parent-teacher conferences.

DeAmico also thanked the following organizations that donated money in conjunction with the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament: Millersville Recreation Department, Cleveland State Bank, Denise and Terry Schaller, Lynn Berg, Jerome Goddard, Howards Grove Athletic Association and S&T Motors.
