Dutchmen go long in BEC win over Resorters

OOSTBURG – The Oostburg Flying Dutchmen outscored Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 29-7 in the first half and poured in 10 three-pointers to fuel a 58-31 rout in boys basketball play here Thursday night.

Oostburg improved to 3-3 in the Big East Conference (3-4 overall). The Resorters, who have lost four straight, dropped to 0-5 in BEC action (1-7 overall).

Brett Ebbers and Jake Daane led the Dutchmen’s three-point arsenal with four and three treys, respectively. Ebbers and Daane led Oostburg in scoring with 14 points each.

Elkhart shot only 37 percent from the field, compared to Oostburg’s 45 percent.

“I was pleased with our ball movement and shot selection. Elkhart did a solid job of limiting our inside opportunities, so we were forced to take a few more perimeter shots,” said Oostburg head coach Kevin Bruggink.

“I was pleased with our offensive rebounding and ability to handle their pressure at various points in the game.”

The Dutchmen held a 27-19 rebounding advantage, including a 10-6 edge on offense.

“We had a good practice Wednesday, so I felt good about going over there but we played poorly. It’s a huge disappointment,” said Resorter head coach Ray Mlada.

“We didn’t communicate, played soft and showed very little mental toughness. Ultimately it’s my responsibility to make sure the kids are focused, so over the holidays we will try to find some kids that want to get focused on becoming a more competitive team.”

Tyler Schultz led Elkhart in with nine. Caleb Broaddus and Anthony Klahn grabbed a team-high five boards each.

Alec Ardnt paced the Dutchson men in rebounding with seven. Dawson Wilterdink had a teamhigh four steals. Oostburg had an impressive 14 steals.
