Donald H. Janssen, age 85, died Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Kindred Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL.

Born on April 16, 1931 in Chicago, IL, Don was the son of Raymond and Mary (Van Wetering), brother of Ronald (Joan) and Raymond (Patricia) Janssen. Don’s parents and Raymond preceded him in death. Don had three sons with his first wife, Patricia: Scot Janssen (Carole) of McLean, VA; Patrick (Kristine) of Castle Rock, CO; and Todd (Sondra) of Georgetown, TX, brother in law Ivin D. Thompson (Renee)of Campbellsport WI, sister in law Pamela K. Calliari of Tacoma, WA a mother in law June J. Thompson South Pasadena Fl. Don also had numerous nieces and nephews.

Don married Linda (Lyn) Thompson on May 12, 1990. With this marriage, Don became the step father to Lyn’s son, Dan Bronkhorst (Kelli). Don and Lyn experienced many, many happy years together. During their marriage the grandchildren Matthew, Michael, Bailey; Steven and Alex; Caroline and Nicholas; and Austin were born.

A graduate of the Milwaukee Business Institute, Don was the agent & broker for Plymouth Insurance Agency, Inc. in Plymouth, WI. As the sole owner, Don owned, managed, and invested in residential and commercial properties. It was during this period that he met his wife, Lyn. He was very active in the community, serving as Treasurer for the Plymouth Hospital Board and an officer in the local Rotary Club. Don was a 60-year continuous member of the American Legion and held the Post Commander position for the local American Legion.

His American Legion membership was made possible by his three years of service during the Korean Conflict. He completed Infantry School and had his most signifi- cant assignment with the 88th Airborne Division. For his service, he received his parachute badge, National Defense and Good Conduct Medals.

After retiring full time in 1992, Don moved to Tampa, FL, where Lyn was working with GTE. With her retirement in 1998, they moved to St. Pete Beach, FL, where many new friends were made. For many years, Don was an active tennis player and golfer. Enjoying traveling with his friends, he made annual golfing trips and leisure trips to Greece, Italy, France and vacations to visit family. A man of deep faith, Don was an active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in St. Pete Beach. A strong believer in giving back to the community, Don volunteered each week at Daystar Life Center, where those in need receive food, clothing, and other emergency services. Don will always be remembered for his goodness to others, his wide smile, his joke telling abilities, his sloppy joes and poppy seed tortes, take-home boxes and his wonderful hair!

Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Friday, January 13, 2017, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 445 82nd Avenue, St. Pete Beach, FL. Interment will be at Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St. Petersburg, FL 33708, on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at 10:45 am.
