Save the caboose

To the Editor,

Happy New Year to all! This year is the 119th anniversary of the Elkhart Lake Railroad Depot and the 46th anniversary of the Village Historical Society. The Elkhart Lake Farmer’s Market at the site also celebrated its 25th birthday and continues to attract people from a wide area.

We wish to express our gratitude to all who have participated in our annual fundraising in the past. As always, we continue with the maintenance of the Depot. Repairs, cleaning and upkeep of the building are ongoing.

The Historical Society also supports education in our village by giving a scholarship to an outstanding senior each spring.

This past year we began the renovation of the caboose. Unfortunately, the renovation was a larger job than originally expected. The scope of the project doubled based on what was found. Additional work on the roof, rafters and cupola were needed. We decided to move forward with the work in order to save the caboose.

Phase 2, which is under consideration, would involve installing an open-air awning to protect the caboose and avoid any future damage. Completion of the project is projected for late spring of 2017. We are committed to preserving the Caboose and would like to thank our previous donors for making this possible.

Once again, we are asking for your support. Most of us have a sentimental attachment to the Depot and the Caboose, which is the historical center in our village. We appreciate any and all contributions. Your generosity will make a difference and all contributions are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to:
