Meaning of feminism described

When asked what the word ‘feminism’ means, most people, will “first recoil in horror and then provide an inaccurate definition,” according to Dr. Valerie Murrenus Pilmaier. An associate professor of English, Pilmaier is the featured speaker for UW-Sheboygan’s February Speaker’s Series lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.

She plans to reference George Bernard Shaw’s play, You Never Can Tell, as she discusses the different waves of both American and British feminism, hoping it will serve as a “gentle reminder that we need to see beyond gender to the essence of the person.” The one-hour lecture takes place in the Wombat Room (Room 2114) on the UWSheboygan campus, located at One University Drive in Sheboygan. Admission and parking are free.

Pilmaier has taught English composition, literature as well as gender, sexuality and women’s studies at UW-Sheboygan since 2009.
