Tigers clinch share of BEC championship

HILBERT – The Howards Grove Tigers clinched at least a share of their second straight Big East Conference girls basketball regular-season title with a 60-31 drubbing of Hilbert here Friday night.

HG upped its BEC record to 12-0 (15-1 overall) and made it 14 wins in a row. The Tigers, who lead second-place Oostburg (11-1 in the league) by one game, can wrap up the outright BEC title with a win at home against Sheboygan Lutheran Thursday night.

The Tigers salted the game away by outscoring the Wolves 31-7 in the first half. Sam Yancy and Brittany Schaller led the HG attack in the half with 10 and eight points, respectively. Schaller hit two three-pointers in the opening half.

Yancy, a senior forward, paced HG in scoring with 17 points. She was 7-for-8 at the foul line. Schaller and Addi Gerber contributed 14 points each.

Ashley Reinemann led the Tigers in steals with five, followed by Olivia Stauss with three. Schaller had a team-high five assists and Stauss and Yancy had three each.

Yancy grabbed a team-best six rebounds. Schaller and Gerber had five apiece.

Makaylee Kuhn led the Wolves in scoring with 10.

“I thought we played a great defensive first half, holding them to only seven points,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“They struggled against our pressure and we did a nice job helping out on Kuhn [their leading scorer this season]. I don’t think we allowed her anything easy.

“Offensively, Yancy and Schaller had nice games. In the second half, Gerber was our spark,” said Georgeff.

Gerber led HG in second-half scoring with 11.

“Again, give credit to Ashley Reinemann who guarded Kuhn for the most of the game. She’s a difference maker on the defensive end for our team,” said the coach.

Kuhn tallied only two points in the first half.

The Wolves fell to 4-8 in the BEC (5-11 overall).
