Panthers’ Josephs wins State Invite diving title

SHOREWOOD – Senior Riley Josephs won the diving event to lead the Plymouth Panthers to sixth place in a strong field at the Small School State Invitational boys swimming and diving meet here Saturday.

Josephs scored 365.85 points for 11 dives. He is the second PHS diver to win a Small School State diving title.

PHS scored 159 points in the 18-team meet. Monona Grove, the defending Division 2 state champion, captured first with 409 points, followed by Grafton at 269.5. The invitational included many of the top D-2 teams in the state.

The Panthers’ top finisher in the swimming competition was the 200-yard medley relay which took fourth in 1 minute, 48.19 seconds. The relay included Harrison Strutz, Leander Leinen, Ben Schaefers and Dawson Smith.

“This was a very successful meet for us – finishing sixth against some of the best teams in the state,” said Panther head coach Clare Sedlacek.

“Riley probably had his best performance of the season against some good competition. Charlie Aschenbach, a first-year diver, had his best meet of the season [placing seventh].

“Our medley relay was seeded fourth and finished fourth. The guys were just off their best time of the season but that’s really understandable considering the time of the season. Harrison had the second-fastest opening split of the race,” said Sedlacek.

“Harrison had his best time of the season [in the 100 backstroke], securing the only individual medal for a [PHS] swimmer, placing sixth.”

Strutz had a time of 57.94 seconds.

“Ben Schaefers put in a fabulous effort in the last 200 yards of the 500 free, catching two swimmers who were four seconds ahead of him with eight laps remaining in the race,” said the coach.

Schaefers finished ninth in 5:22.22.

“This [meet] sets us up to have a successful end of the season. These guys have worked extremely hard and are ready to swim fast,” said Sedlacek.

PHS will host the Eastern Wisconsin Conference Meet Saturday.
