The No. 4-seeded Tigers, 14-5, advance to the second round Tuesday, Feb. 14 at home against No. 5-seeded Cedar Grove-Belgium at approximately 7:15 p.m.

The No. 13-seeded Elkhart Resorters, 3-16, drop into the consolation bracket. They will play at No. 12-seeded Reedsville in the first round Tuesday, Feb. 14 at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Peter Grimm’s three-pointer started the run. Jack Baldwin hit two layups off assists from Stauss and Grimm to lead the scoring during the stretch.

The Resorters didn’t score until Tyler Schultz hit a driving layup 6:00 into the game. Elkhart committed a turnover on four of its first six possessions.

Elkhart had a very difficult time on offense in the opening half against the Tigers’ tenacious manto man defense. The Resorters had 10 turnovers and were only 3-for-17 from the field in the first half.

The Tigers scored several baskets inside against the smaller Elkhart team, hit two fast-break layups and four three-balls in the first half.

The Resorters settled down in the second half and played well on offense and defense. They committed only four turnovers, attacked the basket strong and tightened up on defense.

Elkhart outscored HG 24-19 in the second half, led by Tyler Schultz and Caleb Broaddus with eight points each.

Broaddus led the Resorters in scoring with 13 points for the game, including three treys.

“We had a good first half. Our offense was real good in the first half. We did a good job of rebounding,” said Tiger head coach Wade Georgeff.

“They [Resorters] were a lot more aggressive in the second half. We got a little lazy on defense and they beat us down the floor a couple times. They outplayed us in the second half,” said Georgeff.

“Our kids battled hard. They could’ve called it quits at halftime,” said Resorter head coach Ray Mlada.

“We just weren’t aggressive, defensively, in the first half. In the second half we tightened up, defensively, and contested them near the basket. We rebounded better and shot better.

“Howards Grove has a nice group. They have a lot of talent. All of our kids battled hard and they stuck together,” said Mlada.

“Eric Reinemann and Derek Stauss rebounded well. Bryce did a nice job shooting. Jack Baldwin keeps getting better,” said Georgeff.

JUNIOR VARSITY GAME

The Tigers’ JV 1 team improved to 19-0 with a 40-25 victory. Dylan Barutha paced HG in scoring with 12 points and Will Rautmann hit 11.

Jeff Fredricks led the Resorters’ offense with seven points, followed by Dante Miller and Alex Viglietti with five each.
