‘Taste of Greece’ event scheduled

Sheboygan’s second “Taste of Greece” event will be held Saturday, March 4 at Breaking Bread Banquet Hall. Organized by Sheboygan’s Greek Fest sponsors, St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, the one-day event will be a sampler of Fest foods and include dancing and cooking demonstrations.

Doors will open at 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., and admission and parking is free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase all day long. Breaking Bread is located at 6451 S. Business Dr.

The St. Spyridon Dancers will perform in costume at 1 and 3:30 p.m. and invite their audience to join them in learning some dance steps. A cooking demonstration on working with filo dough to roll those amazing little spinach triangles will be at 2 p.m and shaping and baking sweet cookie twists will be at 4:30 p.m.

Members of the church and Breaking Bread staff will prepare a sampling of traditional festival foods including Greek chicken, spinach pie, gyro, Greek fries and salad. Greek kabobs will be available in a limited number. New this year will be pastitsio, a layered noodle and meat dish sometimes called “Greek Lasagne.” Church bakers will also make a variety of Greek cookies and pastry, including baklava. All will be available for purchase at a “food stand” presentation, with both tables for eating at the banquet hall and carryout an option.

A raffle drawing to win a free “taste” of all the featured food items at June’s Sheboygan’s Greek Fest will be available. That annual 3-day event is the last weekend of June on Sheboygan’s lakefront.

St. Spyridon Church is one of the oldest Greek church structures in the country that still houses regular liturgy services. The annual Greek Fest is it’s major fundraiser, now held the last weekend in June each year.

Information updates on both festivals, and Sunday services, can be found at www.stspyridonsheboygan.org.
