New Wave

As You See It

To The Editor-

As I see it. New Wave Feminists is the Pro Life group that was dropped from sponsorship of the DC Women’s march in January. They weren’t even given the courtesy of a call to let them know. Pro Choice groups pressured the organizers to drop them. It wasn’t billed as a “Pro-Choice” march but as a “Women’s march.

NewWave Feminists say, “We don’t work to make abortion illegal. We work to make it unthinkable and unnecessary.” They work to support women during their pregnancy. They are anti-war, anti-death penalty, anti-torture, and believe in the intrinsic value of all human life. They support women’s issues like more generous family leave policies. Their views represent a very large percentage of women in America.

While only 41% of women support making abortion illegal with only a few exceptions, 65% 65% support legislation to ban abortions after 20 weeks with only a few exceptions. This reflects the view that the fetus is fully human and has intrinsic value. Most European countries limit abortion to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy unless the health of the mother is in danger. A few allow it as late as 19 to 28 weeks. We are one of four nations on Earth that allow late term abortions for any reason.

Although abortion is undoubtedly a controversial issue, there is broad support for limits. A 2011 Gallup poll found that a “large percentage” of both “self-described ‘pro-choice’ and ‘pro-life’ Americans” support making abortion illegal in the third trimester. Against this area of clear common ground, Planned Parenthood has worked vigorously to oppose late-term abortion bans. New Wave Feminists may be more representative of women’s views and issues that the pro-choice groups who pressured to have them dropped from sponsorship of the Women’s March.
