Prep basketball a joy to watch
Greg Ceilley • REVIEW SPORTS EDITOR

While watching the high school boys and girls basketball playoffs this season it reminded me why I love covering prep sports. I marveled at the competitive spirit, athleticism and desire shown by these athletes.

These players were leaving it all on the court – diving for loose balls, battling for rebounds, playing hard-nosed defense and attacking the rim. You can easily their passion for the game.

I also enjoy reporting on basketball and high school sports as a whole because of the school spirit and my interaction with the athletes and coaches. It’s great to see the enthusiasm and support from the student section and the parents. Several times over the years athletes have told me that the home crowds energize their teams.

I thoroughly enjoy interviewing the athletes and coaches after the games. I’m impressed with how team-oriented many athletes are when I interview them. They often tell me how much of a team effort it was and how proud they are of their teams.

I sometimes get caught up in the excitement of covering a team in person. It was thrilling for me to watch the Howards Grove girls basketball team earn a trip to state with a dramatic 52-50 win over Kenosha St. Joseph in a D-4 sectional final Saturday.

It was so enjoyable to see how excited and joyful the HG Tiger team was after it won. I interviewed three Tigers after the game and they were thrilled about their team advancing to the Big Dance. I’m really happy for the Tigers, especially the seniors.

“We’ve worked so hard in our basketball careers ever since middle school,” said Tiger senior point guard Brittany Schaller after the sectional title game.

The seniors on the HG team have played together all the way back to grade school.

“We gave everything we had so this road [to a possible state championship] won’t end,” said HG senior forward Sam Yancy following the game.

It’s always nice to see a team’s hard work pay off.
