Ripon falls in D-3 state semis

MADISON – Appleton Xavier hit 11 three-pointers to key an 81-74 win over Ripon in the Division 3 boys state basketball tournament semifinals Thursday afternoon at UWMadison’s Kohl Center.

Ripon, the champion of the East Central Conference which includes Plymouth, finished 26- 1. The Tigers and Xavier were ranked first and second, respectfully, in the final Associated Press D-3 poll.

Xavier captured the state title Saturday afternoon with a 73-47 rout over Prescott to finish 28-0. Guard Hunter Plamann poured in 29 points to spark Xavier’s attack. Owen Hamilton led Prescott (24-4) with 21 points.

Xavier used an 18-8 run to build a 45-33 halftime lead over Ripon. The Tigers closed to within four on three occasions in the last three minutes of the second half but the Hawks held them off. Xavier made five free throws in the final 1:29 to seal the win.

Eddie Muench led Ripon’s offense with 26 points and Bennett Vander Plas hit 21. Sam Ferris paced the Hawks in scoring with 25 and Plamann netted 22.

Destiny (Milwaukee), which defeated Howards Grove in a sectional final, won the D-4 state championship with a 76- 55 drubbing of Darlington Saturday afternoon. Terrance Banyard keyed Destiny’s attack with 22 points. Will Schwartz paced Darlington (27-1) with 18.

Destiny and Darlington were ranked first and second, respectfully, in the D-4 poll.

Destiny, which finished 26- 1, beat Manitowoc Roncalli in the semifinals, 71-54, on Thursday night. Romaine Robinson led Destiny in scoring with 19. Mitchel Schneider paced Roncalli (13-14) with 22.
