State tourism booster honored

Gary Knowles was honored at the 2017 Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Milwaukee with the “Governor’s Tourism Legacy Award.”

The award is presented to an individual who has “shown a long lasting and permanent contribution to the industry … with distinguished service…”

Gov. Scott Walker noted, “For more than 40 years, Knowles has ... put Wisconsin on the ‘better get there’ list for travelers and journalists.”

As former Director of the Wisconsin Division of Tourism Bureau of Communications, Knowles dedicated his career to promoting tourism in Wisconsin. Knowles was raised in Glenbeulah, graduated from Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School (1964) and is the son of the late Eugene and Delpha Knowles (Fenner, of Plymouth) and step-son of Carl Fenner (Plymouth).

He lives with his wife, Mae, in Madison, serves as president of the Midwest Travel Journalists Association, writes “Gary’s Getaways” for the 16 suburban Chicago Journal and Topics Newspapers, and serves as ‘travel advisor’ on Wisconsin Public Radio’s Joy Cardin Show.

The awards ceremony took place during the closing dinner of the 30th Annual Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism, which was held at the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee.

“Wisconsin’s natural beauty and iconic attractions bring travelers to our state from near and far, but it’s the passion of individuals and organizations in the tourism industry that keeps them coming back year after year,” Walker said.
