Eight-run outburst keys Resorters’ win

NEW HOLSTEIN – The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to key a 17-9 win over host New Holstein in softball action Tuesday evening.

The nonconference game was the season opener for both teams.

Elkhart collected three hits and four walks, plus two hit batters in the sixth. Sonia Schubert ripped an RBI triple, Ciara Hassinger hit a run-scoring double and Megan Waage stroke an RBI single in the frame. The Resorters led 15-5 after the eight-run outburst.

The Resorters banged out 11 hits, led by Schubert with three and Holly Zorn, two. Mad- die Schneider had a team-high three RBIs, followed by Claire Feldmann and Waage with two each.

Elkhart stole a whopping eight bases, led by Schubert with three and Ellie Ausloos, two. Schubert also scored a team-best five runs and Feldmann had three.

Waage picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Zorn. Waage gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts in four innings. Zorn allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with one walk and a strikeout in three innings.

Three Husky pitchers combined to allow nine walks.

“Overall, we had a good first game. We ran the bases well and made them throw the ball around. Our batting was good,” said Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann.

“Our pitching was solid. I was happy with our pitchers’ control. Hassinger did a good job at catcher and hit well,” said Feldmann.

“We need to clean up some things and we’ll be fine.”

Elkhart committed seven errors and the Huskies had six.

Karli Schmitz paced NH in hits with three. Casey Schmitz led in RBIs with three.
