Panthers swing hot bats in ECC rout

RIPON – The Plymouth Panthers exploded for a season-high 18 hits as they pounded host Ripon, 15-3, in softball action Thursday afternoon.

The game was the Panthers’ East Central Conference opener. PHS raised its overall record to 2-2. The contest ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Maddy Straub and Jessica Leider led PHS in hits with three each. Straub, Sommer Stoney and Kayla Prahl had a team-high three RBIs apiece and Leider had two. Leider led in steals with three.

PHS whacked seven doubles, led by Straub and Sylvia Peters with two each.

The Panthers blew the game open by scoring seven runs in the top of the third and fourth innings to take a 15-2 lead. PHS plated a combined seven runs in the third and fourth with two outs.

“It took us a couple innings to adjust to the pitching but when we did the girls really hit well,” said PHS head coach Dawn Krebsbach.

“Offensively, we did good. Hopefully we can build on this as we have tough conference games coming up in the next two weeks.”

Peters fired a five-hitter to earn the win. The junior right-hander chalked up a season-best nine strikeouts, allowed two earned runs and walked three.

“Sylvia had good control of her pitches and really worked in her different speeds. She did quite well tonight,” said Krebsbach.

In junior varsity play, the Panthers routed Ripon, 21-3. Hannah Held sparked the PHS attack with four RBIs.

Held and Kennedy Arbuckle led PHS in hits with two each. Maezie Reilly and Grace Wynveen combined on a two-hitter for PHS, with starter Reilly earning the win. The game ended after four innings because of the 15- run rule.

On April 3, PHS and visiting Sheboygan Falls tied, 13-13, in a nonconference game. Reilly had three hits and three RBIs to ignite Plymouth’s offense.
