Gonring’s bat propels Spartans past PHS

PLYMOUTH – Nicole Gonring banged out four hits to power West Bend West to an 8-0 softball win over the Plymouth Panthers Friday afternoon.

The nonconference victory hiked the Spartans’ record to 2-0 while the Panthers slipped to 2-3.

Alex Ronforf slugged a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning and Megan Kurtz contributed a two-run double in the first for the Spartans.

PHS committed a whopping eight errors which led to five unearned runs by West.

Marie Ferris twirled a five-hit shutout. Ferris walked only one and fanned eight.

Sylvia Peters was the losing hurler and went the distance. Peters allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Plymouth’s best scoring opportunity was in the first when it had two runners in scoring position but Ferris escaped the jam with two straight strikeouts.

The Panthers had five singles – one each by Peters, Jessica Leider, Kendra Stauss, Jess Fenske and Kayla Prahl.

“We needed to string a few hits together. If we would have capitalized in the first inning it might have changed the tone of the game,” said PHS head coach Dawn Krebsbach.

“Our mindset wasn’t in the game from the beginning. We need to improve defensively, especially with an upcoming tough [East Central] conference schedule.”
