Medalist Baldwin leads Tigers to BEC win

SHEBOYGAN – Sophomore Jack Baldwin fired an even-par 35 to win medalist honors and lead the Howards Grove Tigers to first place in Tuesday afternoon’s Big East Conference North Division golf meet at the Town and Country Golf Club.

The Tigers shot a strong score of 167 in windy, cold weather at the nine-hole Riverwoods Course. The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters finished second in the six-team meet with 180 and were paced by junior Max Ward who placed fourth with a 43.

The Tigers’ other low players were Matthew Bagnall, who placed third with a 41, Jake Fritz, tied for fifth with a 44, and Mason Valenstein and Jacob Brunner who shared the fourth-lowest score on the team at 47 each.

Elkhart’s other low golfers were Sam Lutzke, tied for fifth with a 44, Anthony Klahn who took eighth at 46 and Brennen Cain with a 47.

Ryan Splittgerber of HG was the low junior varsity player with a 44, followed by EL-G’s Alex Viglietti with a 48. The Resorters won the JV meet with 209 and HG was second at 247.

“Jack played great today. It is always tricky playing in the cold weather early in the year but Jack showed up with a great attitude today,” said Tiger head coach Joe Hansen.

“He grew a lot as a freshman last year and has gotten his sophomore year off to a great start. Beyond this I thought we played well but we know this isn’t our best golf. There is still a lot of room to grow and I am happy to see our team get off to a hot start,” said Hansen.

“I was really pleased with how we shot for our first meet. Hats off to Howards Grove for playing really well,” said Resorter head coach Bart Larson.

“I thought everyone played pretty well and everyone showed a little rust which is to be expected this time of the year with the conditions and lack of real practice time leading up to this meet.

“Overall, I was happy with the 180 and second place. We will continue to get better,” said Larson.

The nine-hole conference meets and the 18-hole BEC tournament are used to determine the overall BEC champion.
