Rams sweep Tigers in BEC twinbill

HOWARDS GROVE – Reigning Big East Conference softball champion Random Lake swept a doubleheader from host Howards Grove Tuesday, 6-2 and 7-5.

The Rams upped their BEC record to 3-0 (3-0 overall). The Tigers slipped to 0-2 in the league (0-3 overall).

In the opener, the Rams scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 3-1. Cathryn Hiller’s two-run double was the key hit.

Hiller was the winning pitcher with a three-hitter. She fanned 14 batters and walked only one. Hiller gave up one earned run.

Zayla Mueller cracked a double and Sarah Gardner had an RBI for HG.

“This was a well-played game on both ends. We played a great game against the defending champions. I was very impressed with our effort, especially our freshmen,” said Tiger head coach Tom Heier.


In the second game, the Rams held off a late rally by HG. The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the sixth to close to within 7-5. Ashleigh Brooks and Cassidy Kahl delivered RBI singles in the frame.

Hiller came on in relief in the seventh and blanked the Tigers to earn a save. Starter Chaise Arndt earned the win.

The Tigers banged out 10 hits, led by Paige Splittgerber and Evelynn Spaeth with two each. Spaeth had a team-high two RBIs.

Arndt and Caty DeBroux paced the Rams in hits with two each. Kaelynne Maxwell led in RBIs with a pair.
