State 32 project from HG to Kiel moved up to 2017 by DOT

A Sheboygan County project is on a list of highway projects being advanced by the state Department of Transportation.

The repaving of State 32 from its intersection with State 42 in downtown Howards Grove to its intersection with State 57 just south of Kiel has been moved into the list of projects the DOT will do this year, thanks to additional funds available from project savings realized by the department.

Gov. Scott Walker directed the DOT to advance $65 million in projects statewide into the 2017 schedule thanks to savings on previous projects.

“Savings on the highway projects we planned for this year allows us to do more projects with existing funds,” DOT Secretary Dave Ross explained.

He said the department will fund an additional 21 projects around the state this June, including the State 32 project in Sheboygan County.

That project will see the highway milled and overlayed for a more than eight-mile stretch.

Lower fuel prices and more competitive bids on projects have resulted in increased savings on road projects, according to a press release from the DOT.

In addition to the savings on projects already contracted for in 2017, the DOT completed an updated revenue forecast and is projecting an additional $38 million in available revenues for the next budget.

“We are generating more revenue for transportation without raising the gas tax or registration fees,” Ross noted.

“The redirected savings and increased revenue forecasts are great news for the state,” Walker commented. “We’ll do more projects and bond $44.8 million less than planned.”
