Tigers’ attack keys first victory

STOCKBRIDGE – The Howards Grove Tigers pounded out 14 hits to fuel an 18-6 drubbing of Hilbert/Stockbridge in Big East Conference softball action here Thursday afternoon.

The win was the Tigers’ first of the season and improved their BEC record to 1-2 (1-3 overall). The Indians dropped to 0-5 in the league (0-5 overall).

“Overall, it was nice to get our first win. We continue to improve,” said Tiger head coach Tom Heier.

HG busted the game open with six runs in the top of the fifth and eight in the sixth to build an 18-6 lead. The game ended after six due to the 10-run rule.

Sarah Gardner and Evelynn Spaeth sparked the Tigers’ attack with three hits each and Paige Splittgerber added two. Courtney Binversie, Zayla Mueller and Cassidy Kahl had a team-high three RBIs apiece and Splittgerber contributed a pair.

Gardner, Spaeth and Taylor Bubolz paced HG in runs with three each.

Splittgerber earned a complete game win. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Sydnee Koenig belted two home runs and had four RBIs to power the Indians’ offense. Leigha Hermann cracked two singles.
