Fast start lifts Cougars over PHS

CAMPBELLSPORT – The Campbellsport Cougars grabbed a 5-0 lead after two innings en route to an 8-3 softball win over the visiting Plymouth Panthers Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars upped their East Central Conference record to 3-1 (4-1 overall). PHS fell to 1-3 in ECC play (2-6 overall).

Madison Mitsis hit a two-run, inside-the-park homer which gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead after one frame. Kaitlyn Schill and Taylor Schmidt had one RBI

Schill led Campbellsport in hits with three. Mitsis had a teamhigh two RBIs.

Sommer Stoney paced PHS in RBIs with two, including a run-scoring single. Ellie Potrykus contributed an RBI single. The Panthers didn’t have any batters with multiple hits.

The winning pitcher was Alyssa Muench who gave up two earned runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts and only two walks in going the distance.

Sylvia Peters was the losing hurler and pitched a complete game. Peters surrendered eight earned runs on nine hits with five walks, seven strikeouts and one hit batter.

“Campbellsport hit the ball hard. Defensively, we keep improving,” said PHS head coach Dawn Krebsbach whose team made zero errors.

“Now our bats have to get going. We need to be aggressive at the plate. We had five looking strikeouts.”
