Earth Day concert at UW-S

UW-Sheboygan celebrates Earth Day on Thursday, April 27 with a musical tribute by the Jazz Ensemble, University Chorus and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The concert begins at 7pm in the Fine Arts Theatre on campus, located at One University Drive in Sheboygan.

Musical numbers from the University Chorus include Simon and Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and an exceptional arrangement of Let There Be Peace on Earth by Mark Hayes. Selections were chosen “to educate about our amazing planet and to elucidate the fragile Earth and also embrace our human fragility,” according to Christy Talbott, Assistant Professor of Music, who directs the Chorus.

Special performances include the young sons of chorus member Melissa Ninham, who will sing the well known spiritual, Kum Ba Yah as well as sisters Rachel and Hannah Rice, who will accompany the chorus on their violins for a beautiful Spanish ballad, VencerĂ¡ El Amor (“Love will Overcome”).

Paul Sucherman conducts both the Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble’s selections will celebrate spring, with selections that include Rodgers and Hammerstein's It Might As Well Be Spring, Irving Berlin's Blue Skies, and At Last, which also features the Jazz Ensemble. Community members may know Mr. Sucherman from his local work as musical director of TYA productions, various high school musical productions, as well as performances at the Paddock Club in Elkhart Lake.

The Jazz Ensemble will present several different jazz styles, including Bossa Nova One Note Samba, Big Band Star Dust, and Salsa Oye Vomo Va as well as Neal Hefti's Theme from the Odd Couple.

According to Talbott, the concert combines all that’s best about a university music department.
