Pops Band to play at Calvary Lutheran

The Sheboygan Pops Band will perform a spring concert at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2132 N. 27th St., Sheboygan, Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. The concert is family-friendly and open to everyone. There will be a free will offering at the door.

The band will open with the lively march, Mustang March, by Eric Osterling.

Tristeza, which translates to “goodbye sadness” was origi- nally written for vocal and instrumental. The Pops will play a band arrangement of the number written in a Bossa Nova style.

The Planets by Gustav Holst is a seven-movement orchestral suite. Each movement is named after a planet of the solar system. The movements are intended to convey ideas and emotions brought on by the planets. The band will be performing the fi- nal movement, Jupiter. Perhaps it represents the “prime” of life with a central melody that pops up quite often. Holst described it as, “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.”

On the lighter side, the band will also play selections from The Wizard of Oz, standard pop favorites, along with selections from Sinatra and marches.

The Sheboygan Pops will continue their season with concerts in Fountain Park this summer.
