Indians outlast EL-G in BEC showdown

MISHICOT – The Mishicot Indians rallied late to edge the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters, 12-10, in a Big East Conference softball showdown here Friday afternoon.

The game was a battle of BEC title contenders. Mishicot upped its league record to 6-0 (7-0 overall), one-half game behind front-running Random Lake which is 7-0. Elkhart is third in the BEC at 4-1 (5-1 overall).

The Resorters scored three runs in the top of the sixth to go up 10-8. Mishicot answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to seize a 12-10 lead. The key blow for the Indians was a two-run single by Katie Koeppel off reliever Megan Waage which gave the home team a 12-10 advantage.

“It was a great softball game. It could’ve gone either way. It was a total team effort,” said Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann.

“They had timely hits and we had timely hits. Our hitting and execution on offense were spoton. We still have some things to clean up [on defense].”

The Resorters’ hit the ball very well against the Indians’ ace, senior Alyssa Ahumada, an All-BEC first-team pitcher last year. Elkhart banged out 12 hits, led by Sonia Schubert, Claire Feldmann, Raechel Grunewald and Mandy McLaughlin with two each.

“We stayed off the rise ball. We hit the change-up too [along with the fastball]. Our kids prepared well in the batting cage,” said coach Feldmann.

Feldmann paced EL-G in RBIs with two.

Kourtney LeRoy had a teamhigh three hits for Mishicot. Koeppel led in RBIs with three.

Ahumada was the winning pitcher and went the distance. She allowed eight earned runs and one walk while striking out five.

EL-G starting hurler Holly Zorn took the loss. Zorn threw 5-1/3 innings and surrendered 12 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
