‘Cool Chemistry’ family show hosted at UW-S

“Cool Chemistry” is coming to The University of Wisconsin Sheboygan Wednesday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre.

Anyone ages 3 to 93 will enjoy the annual family friendly show that promises to be educational, exciting and somewhat explosive.

The ‘Cool Chemistry’ show features exciting chemistry demonstrations performed by UW-Sheboygan Chemistry students and is FREE for children under 12. Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. James Kabrhel manages the popular outreach that includes audience participation to explain core chemistry concepts such as liquids, solids and gases.

Science comes to life with demonstrations of the effects liquid nitrogen, one of the coldest substances on earth, can have on items including bananas, balloons and bouquets of flowers. Other demonstrations including touching a freshly made cloud and seeing what happens when you crush frozen flowers. Demonstrating the “fun” side of chemistry helps to inspire interest and curiosity in chemistry, beginning at a young age.

UW-Sheboygan students will be performing and describing the attention-grabbing experiments, including explosions, magical color changes, at-home lava lamps, dragon’s breath and more. After the show ends, Dr. Karrie Rukamp, senior lecturer in UW-S’s Chemistry department, will show interested children (ages 5 and up) how to make their own slime.

Tickets are $2 for adults and students ages 13 and up. Children, ages 12 and under and UW-Sheboygan students are free. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets will be available at the door only (while supplies last). For safety reasons, only the first 350 attendees will be admitted on a first come/first served basis. To participate in on-stage demonstrations, children will be able to put their name into a drawing upon entering the theater.
