Doubles sweep lifts Jets over PHS

MANITOWOC – The Manitowoc Roncalli Jets swept the doubles matches to key a 4-2 win over the Plymouth Panthers in Eastern Wisconsin Conference boys dual tennis action here Friday afternoon.

Roncalli won all three of the doubles matches in straight sets. The Panthers slipped to 1-3 in EWC duals.

The only winners for PHS were Joey Osieczanek and Joey Sebranek at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, both in straight sets.

The No. 2 singles match wasn’t completed due to rain. In the match, Plymouth’s Cedric Schamberger lost the first set 4-6 and trailed 1-4 in the second.

“We ran into a very strong Roncalli team that brought back everyone but one player from last year and their experience showed as they took advantage of our inexperience,” said Panther head coach Scott Milslagle.

The Jets tied for second in the EWC race last year with PHS. The Panthers were missing a starter in their Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams for Friday’s meet.

“Luke McKinch and Bennet Dale [freshmen] filled in admirably [at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively] and are very talented young players who make the future of Plymouth tennis look very bright but they have been thrown to the wolves a few times this season, playing both singles and doubles for us,” said Milslagle.

“Joey Osieczanek and Joey Sebranek played great matches against quality opponents and continued their winning ways. I feel both have turned the corner and are gaining the confidence they need to keep winning going forward.”
