Hospital’s environment work praised

HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan is the proud recipient of two Environmental Excellence awards on behalf of Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care.

The Environmental Excellence awards are presented each year by Practice Greenhealth to honor environmental achievements in the health care sector. HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital is a recipient of the Partner for Change award and Greening of the OR award.

Greening of the OR Award

The award recognizes facilities demonstrating the most success in reducing the environmental impact of its surgical suites. Operating rooms are large contributors to a health care facility’s environmental footprint, creating opportunity for significant cost savings and sustainability improvements. The award builds on Practice Greenhealth’s Greening the OR Initiative, which in 2015 alone helped participating facilities save $41.7 million while avoiding 2,150 tons of waste and more than 9 million kilowatt-hours of energy.

Partner for Change Award

This award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas.

“It’s a wonderful honor for our hospital to receive these awards,” said Dan Rocheleau, campus and sustainability Fcilitator for HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital. “This is an awesome reflection of the caring and dedicated work our colleagues do each day. Their effort to ensure not only patient care, but to care for the environment as well is humbling.”

The awards will be presented at the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Gala in Minneapolis, Minn. on May 18.
