Resorters cruise to third straight win

FREDONIA – The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters made it three straight wins with an 9-2 rout over host Ozaukee in a Big East Conference girls soccer match Thursday afternoon.

The Resorters improved to 5-5 in the BEC (7-5 overall). Elkhart has already surpassed last year’s conference and overall win totals. The Warriors dropped to 0-5-1 in the BEC (0-6-2 overall).

Senior forward Camrie Schmitz sparked the Resorters’ attack with four goals and had the team’s two assists. Sofie Sutcliffe scored two goals and Holly Francis, Kianna Bahr and Paige Nelson netted one each. Bahr’s goal was the first in the junior defender’s career.

Elkhart exploded for six goals in the second half after the game was tied 2-2 at halftime. Schmitz, who scored both of her team’s first-half goals, kicked two goals in the second half.

The Warriors led 2-0 on a goal each by Samantha Kroeger and Abby Miller within the first 20 minutes. Schmitz tallied her goals at the 29:46 and 40:49 marks which tied the match.

The Resorters had an impressive 29-9 edge in shots on goal.

“Coming off two physical games we could see the girls were a little tired and sore when we came into the game tonight. Ozaukee took advantage of this and worked the ball, getting two goals in the first 20 minutes,” said Resorter head coach Kevin Ruh.

“We had a few missed switches in the midfield to start the game as we had a few injuries that sidelined some players for this game. This meant some girls played out of position which resulted in allowing the two goals.

“We discussed during an injury timeout what was happening and what we needed to adjust, the girls responded and from the 20-minute mark in the first half only allowed four shots on goal for the rest of the game. On the offensive side we took 23 of our 29 shots on goal after the 20-minute mark,” said Ruh.

“We started the second half with a little energy and stepped up our game to the level we know we can play at.

“Defensively, in the second half we allowed one shot on goal and five shots overall,” the coach pointed out.
