Guse sparks Tigers to rout in regional debut

HOWARDS GROVE – Senior Katie Guse’s hat trick powered the Howards Grove Tigers to an 8-0 drubbing of visiting Sheboygan Lutheran in Division 4 girls regional soccer semifinal action Thursday evening.

The No. 2-seeded Tigers raised their record to 16-5-1. The No. 15-seeded Crusaders finished 0-19.

Guse’s three goals sparked the Tigers to a 6-0 halftime lead. Kaitlynn Near, Malyana McDaniel and Kayla Bender contributed one goal each in the opening half.

Izzy Schmid tallied two goals in the second half. Mc- Daniel, Bender, Cailtin Schmid, Kennedy Theobald, Emma Dehne and Kayla Gilligan had one assist each.

The Tigers had an incredible 39-2 advantage in shots on goal. HG goalie Sara Marten made two saves in her first varsity start. Marten was filling in for starting goalie Olivia Stauss who is sidelines with a rib injury.

“Sara Marten filled in admirably for Stauss with strong support from the defensive backfield of Ashley Reinemann, Kate Bruckschen and Lizzy Betke,” said Tiger head coach David Kisiolek.

“It was a good start to the postseason for our team. The girls have been working on possessing the ball in practice and it carried over nicely into the game.”

Crusader goalie Naomi Griben was credited with 30 saves.
