Four-run frame lifts Huskies over HG

HOWARDS GROVE – New Holstein tallied four runs in the top of the fourth inning to defeat the Howards Grove Tigers, 4-2, in a Big East Conference baseball game here Wednesday night.

The Huskies improved their first-place large-school division record to 5-0 (5-1 overall). The Tigers fell to 2-4 in the smallschool division (2-4 overall). All BEC games count in the two divisions’ standings.

Drake Halbach’s three-run double ignited the Huskies’ surge in the fourth. The fourth run scored on Owen Olson’s single.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the first on Eric Reinemann’s single. HG made it 4-2 in the fourth when Gavin Winter scored on a passed ball.

The Tigers threatened to score in the fifth. After the first two batters were retired Reinemann doubled and Mason Valenstein walked.

Reinemann stole third base and Valenstein swiped second. Isaac Dirker followed with a walk which loaded the bases. Charlie Schnell came in to relieve starting NH pitcher Casey Schrage and struck out the first batter he faced to escape the jam.

Schnell retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh to pick up a save. The senior pitched 2-1/3 innings and allowed zero baserunners while recording three strikeouts.

Schrage was the winner – allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with six walks and two strikeouts in 4-2/3 frames.

Tiger starting pitcher Nic Koenig took the loss. Koenig gave up four earned runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts in six innings. Isaac Dirker threw one inning and allowed no runs on one hit with one walk and no strikeouts.

Reinemann led HG in hits with two. The Tigers stole five bases, led by Reinemann with two.

Olson and Trent Winkel paced the Huskies in hits with two each.
