MSO kicks off Fondy Buttermilk Festival series

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra will open the Buttermilk Festival music series in Fond du Lac Wednesday, June 21.

The 7:15 p.m. concert will be at the Wifler Performance Center in Buttermilk Creek Park on South Park Avenue, and will be moved to the County Fairgrounds EXPO Building in the event of unsuitable weather.

Light classics on the program include Hungarian Dances 5, 6 and 7 by Brahms, Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, and two movements from Aaron Copland’s Rodeo Suite. In a pops vein, the orchestra will play Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Selections from Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady,” and music from the movie “E.T.” by John Williams.

The orchestra will be under the direction of Assistant Conductor Yaniv Dinur. Born in Jerusalem in 1981, Dinur has studied conducting in Israel and America and has performed with orchestras in Israel, Europe, the United States, Canada and Mexico. He recently was appointed music director of the New Bedford Symphony in Massachusetts and will begin his tenure there in September.

Since its inception in 1959, Wisconsin’s own symphony orchestra has found innovative ways to give music a home in the region, develop music appreciation and talent among area youth, and raise the national reputation of Milwaukee. The MSO’s fulltime professional musicians perform more than 135 classics, pops, family, education, and community concerts each season in venues throughout the state.

Now completing its eighth and final season with Music Director Edo de Waart, his tenure has included sold-out concerts, critical acclaim, and a celebrated performance at Carnegie Hall. Following the 2016-17 season, Maestro de Waart will become the MSO’s conductor laureate.

Food concessions, serving sandwiches, snacks, soda and desserts will be available beginning at 6 p.m. hosted by S.H.A.R.D.S.

The performance is funded through general major sponsor and co-sponsor donations, contributions from Friends of the Festival and a free-will offering that will be received during the concert.
