Tigers’ pitching dominates Warriors

HOWARDS GROVE – Outstanding pitching carried the Howards Grove Tigers to a baseball doubleheader sweep over visiting Ozaukee Friday.

Senior Matthew Bagnall fired a no-hitter in the opener as the Tigers cruised to a 15-0 win. HG routed the Warriors in the nightcap, 10-0, behind junior Isaac Dirker’s one-hitter.

The victories raised the Tigers’ Big East Conference record to 4-4 (4-4 overall). Both games ended after 4½ innings due to the 10-run rule.

Ozaukee dropped to 1-8 BEC play (1-8 overall). Both teams are in the BEC small-school division.

Bagnall walked one and struck out four.

“Matt had complete control of his game. He allowed only three runners to reach base. Being a lefty, he dominated the plate with movement and commanded location,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.

“Ozaukee is quite young but we have freshmen playing too and our pitching was very sharp. The offense clicked too while scoring 25 runs in nine innings of the double-dip.”

In the opener, the Tigers erupt hit batters and three singles.

The Tigers drew a whopping 13 walks in game one. Bagnall and freshman Alec Danen led HG in hits with two each. Gavin Winter had a team-high three hits, followed by Dirker and Danen with two each.

GAME TWO

Dirker fanned nine batters and walked none. The lone hit off him was leadoff single by Jotham Higginbotham in the top of the third. Dirker allowed only four baserunners.

“Isaac was just as dominant in the second game. He had good velocity, located well and confi- dently controlled the game. Needless to say we dominated on offense in this one too,” said Weber.

The Tigers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second to build a 9-0 lead. Two-run singles by Nic Koenig and Ryan Splittgerber were the key hits in the frame.

Splittgerber paced HG in hits with two. Koenig led in RBIs with three and Splittgerber had two. The Tigers drew eight walks and stole nine bases.
