Missed scoring chances hurt Tigers

RANDOM LAKE – A lack of timely hitting hurt the Howards Grove Tigers as they lost, 4-0, to host Random Lake in the opener of Wednesday’s Big East Conference baseball twinbill.

The Tigers matched the Rams’ eight hits but left 11 runners on base, compared to only five for the home team. Random Lake routed the Tigers in the nightcap, 12-3.

The Rams hiked their BEC first-place small-school division record to 11-4 (11-6 overall). The Tigers slipped to 6-6 in the division (6-6 overall).

Trenton LaFever earned a shutout in game one. The senior walked four and had three strikeouts.

Isaac Dirker took the loss but pitched well. Dirker gave up four runs (three earned) and only two walks while striking out six in going the route.

The Rams gave LaFever all the support he needed with three runs in the last of the third inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Travis Jacob had an RBI triple, followed by Blake Hall’s run-scoring double and an RBI single by Travis Huiras.

Hall led the Rams in RBIs with two. Huiras and Hall had a team-high two hits each.

Dirker, Matthew Bagnall and Alec Danen paced HG in hits with two apiece.

GAME TWO

The Rams pounded out 12 hits in the nightcap, led by Cordell Huiras, Hall, Bryan Weiss and Scott Paulus with two each. Both of the hits by Cordell Huiras were triples.

Paulus had a team-high three RBIs. Weiss and Cody Holman contributed two apiece. Holman’s two-run double ignited a sevenrun explosion by the Rams in the bottom of the fourth which gave the home team an 8-2 lead.

The Tigers didn’t have any batters with multiple hits. Nic Koenig and Mason Valenstein had one RBI each.
