Melvin A. Dirks, age 83, of Plymouth, passed away early Tuesday afternoon, June 27, 2017, at Rocky Knoll Healthcare Facility where he was a resident for the past 7 years.

He was born on March 23, 1934 in the Town of Rhine, WI, son of the late John and Edna (Goldbeck) Dirks.

Melvin graduated from Plymouth High School. He received his teaching degree from University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh.

On July 26, 1969 he married Evelyn Kulow in Plymouth, WI. The couple resided in Plymouth since the marriage. Evelyn preceded him in death on December 17, 2015.

Melvin served in the National Guard for many years. He worked as an Elementary Teacher for several years then was Principal at M.K. Roberts Elementary in Fond du Lac.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth and a member of the Wisconsin Teachers Association. He was an avid bowler and bowled in several leagues in Sheboygan. He was inducted into the county-elected Sheboygan County Bowlers Hall of Fame. Melvin also played hard ball in leagues in the Plymouth area.

Survivors include three sons; Thomas Knecht of Plymouth, John (Mickey) Knecht of Plymouth and Dennis Knecht of Big Springs, TX; one daughter-in-law: Janice Knecht of Elkhart Lake; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters: Elaine Kujawa of Milwaukee and Darlene (Dale) Huibregtse of Sheboygan Falls; three brothers-in-law; Fred (Carol) Kulow of Elkhart Lake, Gerald (Cathy) Kulow of Elkhart Lake and Don Kulow of Elkhart Lake and one sister-in-law: Lucille Van Rotz of Milwaukee

He is also survived by nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, one son: Daniel Knecht; one daughter: Bonnie Knecht; brother: Stanley Dirks and daughter-in-law: Mary Knecht; one brother-in-law: Raymond (Freida) Kulow; one sister and brother-in-law; Caroline (Fred) Limberg.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday evening (July 6, 2017) at 6:00 P.M. at Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. Rev. Nathan Meador, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church will officiate. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in Plymouth Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Suchon Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in his Melvin’s name.
