A 19th 4th

Visitors to the Wade House Tuesday (below) got a chance to see how Independence Day was celebrated when the country was less than a century old. The historic site staged an 1850s-style Fourth of July, with period games to play (bottom, far right), a chance to crank homemade ice cream (bottom right) and more. The event was capped by a reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Wade House trade staff (top right) and a salute to the day with period firearms (cover).
