UW-S hosts mixed media exhibit

Area residents are invited to visit the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan Fine Arts Gallery for its latest art exhibit "Remix: Praxis & Juncture" by Sheboygan artist, Peg Haubert.

Her work is on display now through the month of August. An opening reception takes place on Friday, July 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery.

Born in Wisconsin and the oldest in a military family of five children, Peg Haubert’s childhood included lots of travel. The family returned to Wisconsin in the early 1960’s.

After graduating from UW Milwaukee with a BFA Independent Filmmaking, she worked as Manager of Audio Visual Communications at St. Mary’s Columbia Hospital for many years, followed by another decade of independent video production.

Peg now works as a full time artist and volunteers for the Sheboygan Visual Artists as Marketing/Communications Director.

Haubert’s work was equally influenced by Artist James Prohl, a known Traditional Realist teaching classes in his Milwaukee studio and Kenn Kwint also a known Milwaukee based fine artist with a unique approach to making art. The two completely different approaches to making art has enriched Peg’s life and artwork.

This exhibit will feature examples of mixed media metal work created over the past thirty years, featuring selections from the series "The Tooth of Time" as well as examples from her current series in progress "Painting with Fire”. Peg believes it is time to add the two media together, resulting in a few new work samples adding encaustics to the metal mix. Several of the works on view in the exhibit are on loan from private collectors.

“I find it challenging to be adding encaustic to my mix of media. Encaustic is one of the oldest media as it was discovered over 2000 years ago and is now making a comeback,” said Haubert. “It is one of the most playful media I’ve worked with to date and fits perfectly with the often times ancient look of my work.” Haubert teaches encaustic workshops at Lakeshore Art Supplies and in studio at 913 Indiana Ave.

The exhibit will remain on view thru August 30, 2017. UW-Sheboygan is located at One University Drive in Sheboygan. Free parking is available.
