Tigers cruise to victory in regional debut

The K/C catcher is Joe Conklin. – Review photo by Greg Ceilley HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning to fuel an 18-1 pummeling of Kohler/Sheboygan Christian here Tuesday night in the first round of regional baseball action.

HG banged out seven hits and sent 16 batters to the plate in the opening frame as it seized an 11-0 lead. The key hits were a two-run double each from Nic Koenig and Alec Danen.

Koenig had a team-high three RBIs in the first as he also cracked a run-scoring single.

The No. 6-seeded Tigers raised their record to 14-9. The No. 11-seeded Blue Bombers ended their season at 3-21.

The Tigers collected an impressive 17 hits, led by Jake Fritz and Koenig with three each. Mason Valenstein contributed two. All 12 Tigers were in the hit column.

Derek Schueler and Matthew Bagnall scored a team-high three runs apiece.

Four errors by the Blue Bombers led to eight unearned runs.

Koenig, a junior, was the winning pitcher with a five-hitter. He allowed one unearned run and only one walk to go with eight strikeouts. The game ended after 4½ innings due to the 10-run rule.

“Our intensity level was good. Nic threw a great game and we hit the ball a ton – scoring 11 in the first inning and collected a whopping 17 hits,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.

“We feel quite confident going into the regional championship at Kiel. We’ve beaten them twice this season but they are a good team and so are we.”

The Tigers were scheduled to play at Kiel Wednesday, July 12. HG’s wins over Kiel were in Big East Conference play.
