‘Pass the baton’ for next Kiel band concert

The Kiel Municipal Band, under the direction of Jon Meyer, will present another in its series of summer concerts in City Park Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.

This concert continues a new KMB tradition, a “guest conductors’ concert” featuring conductors who are members of the band. They will each lead the band in one piece of music, with selections varying from marches to musicals. The guest conductors have been or currently are music educators and band directors from around the area.

The guest conductors and their pieces are:

Karren Cobble, Elkhart Lake, “All Glory Told,” a contemporary selection by James Swearingen

Ernst Gutschow, Kiel, “Three Dialogs,” an arrangement by former KMB director Edgar P. Thiessen for band and brass quartet.

Ryan Rabe, Sheboygan, “Air for Band,” a lyrical piece by Frank Erickson

Karen Schmahl, Elkhart Lake, “Highlights from ‘Jersey Boys,’” featuring songs from the hit musical.

Natasha Verhulst, Kiel, “March: Celebration and Glory,” a march by James Swearingen

Scott Weir, New Holstein, “The Klaxon,” a classic march by the American composer and band leader Henry Fillmore.

In addition to the guest conductors, the band will premiere a new march by Jonathan Weir, KMB solo cornet player. Rounding out the concert program, the band will perform, “Overture Jubiloso” by Frank Erickson and “Recorded by Sinatra,” a collection of songs made popular by the singer. The concert is free, familyfriendly, and open to everyone. The location in case of rain is the Kiel City Hall second floor gym, which is air-conditioned and handicap accessible.
