JOHN WIRTH, who grew up in Sheboygan Falls in the 1950s and 1960s, will appear at two special events to promote his first book “Days Gone By – Growing Up In Small Town Wisconsin” during the month of August. One event will take place at Firehouse Pizza in Shebygan Falls on Aug. 17, from 6-8 p.m and the other will be at Book Heads in Plymouth on Friday, Aug. 18, from 1-3 p.m. For those who are unfamiliar with Wirth or his writings, “Days Gone By The Falls – Growing up in small town Wisconsin” is his poignant, colorful account of his experiences and exploits growing up in Sheboygan Falls in the 1950s and 1960s.

The book features a collection of 39 newspaper columns, which have appeared on a regular basis in The Sheboygan Falls News weekly newspaper since 2007.

The book takes readers back to a time when imagination, creativity and the pursuit of good, clean fun ruled the lives of youngsters.

This by-gone era came long before the modern technology revolution rose up to take away much of kids’ leisure time.

In the book Wirth, who now resides in Largo, Fla., paints a whimsical portrait of an era when people worked hard without question and played hard without considering the possible dangers of youthful exuberance.

Throughout the 124-page book, which features dozens of black and white photos from the era, readers become acquainted with several unique characters who inhabited many memorable locales in Sheboygan Falls.

To date, the book has sold several hundred copies and gained favorable reviews from readers on amazon.com.

Wirth will be returning to his hometown for his 55th Sheboygan Falls High School Class of 1962 Reunion on Saturday, Aug. 19.

During the week of the reunion, he is set to take time to discuss the book and meet with readers at two special events.

The first event, which is billed as a book discussion and author meet and greet session, will be held at Falls Firehouse Pizza, located at 109 Maple St. in Sheboygan Falls.

During the event, which will run from 6-8 p.m., copies of “Days Gone By – Growing Up In Small Town Wisconsin” will be available for purchase and Wirth will be available to sign copies of the book.

One day later, on Friday, Aug. 18, Wirth will appear at a meet-and-greet and book-signing event at Book Heads Book Store, located at 214 Mill St. in Plymouth, from 1-3 p.m.

This will also give readers and prospective readers a chance to talk with Wirth, purchase a book and to get their copy of the book signed by the author.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the many loyal readers of The Sheboygan Falls News that have enjoyed my articles over the past 10 years,” Wirth said. “Ever since my book has come out, I have heard from many of my readers how much they enjoyed reading the stories.”

Wirth grew up in Sheboygan Falls, and after graduating from Sheboygan Falls High School, he served two years aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer. In 1967 he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Verhage.

They lived in Sheboygan Falls for three years. In 1970, John and Marilyn left the dreaded cold Wisconsin winters and moved to their new home in Largo, Fla.

They have two sons Robert and Donald and two grandchildren.

John worked in the telecommunications business for 40 years, working for three large corporations before retiring.

Marilyn followed him in retirement from a long teaching career two years later.

John enjoys his passions of photography, travel and writing.

“Days Gone By – Growing Up in Small Town Wisconsin” is John’s first book.

“Writing about the events in my life growing up in a small Wisconsin town has proven that my experiences were very similar to the ones others experienced in their lives as well during the late 1950s and early 1960s,” Wirth said. “Publishing my book has been a wonderful experience for me. It is something I will always remember.”
